Multistakeholder initiatives such as the UN Global Compact organize their participants in specific ways. Most importantly, they have to bridge global (universal) principles and local (contextualized) implementation practices. Some initiatives have responded to this need by creating a nested network structure – that is, local networks that are embedded into a wider global “network of networks.” The UN Global Compact, for instance, has more than 100 local networks, which are connected through regional hubs, the Annual Local Network Forum, and interactions with the Global Compact Office. At the core of this commitment is the long-term partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to control a group of debilitating infectious diseases, called “neglected tropical diseases,” which affect mostly poor people in developing countries. Since the partnership began, in 2001, more than 20 million people in sub-Saharan Africa have been screened for sleeping sickness, and more than 170,000 patients have received free treatment for what is a fatal disease, if left untreated. In recent years there has been a large migration wave from India’s rural regions to the cities. Soon, 40 percent of the Indian population will be living in the country’s urban centers. Due to this fast growth and the large influx of people, cities are having trouble providing adequate living spaces, utilities, and facilities. More than 130 million people – equivalent to 40 to 60 percent of the urban population – are expected to be living in substandard housing.
